Crochet Blue Tang Hat






This will be my first time sharing this pattern, so if anything is confusing, feel free to ask or help correct my pattern! Thanks, Natasha (mnopxs2).

Supplies:
*Red Heart Super Saver Black
Less than 1 skein, or Color of your choice.
*Red Heart Super Saver White
Less than 1 Skein, or color of your choice.
*Red Heart Super Saver Blue
Less than 1 Skein, or color of your choice.
*Red Heart Super Saver Bright Yellow
Less than 1 Skein, or color of your choice.
*Size U.S. H or 8 (5 mm) crochet hook or size
needed to obtain gauge. (My stitches are tight so I use a size I or 9 (5.50 mm).
*Scissors
*Yarn Needle

Gauge 4 DC = 1 inch

Abbreviations:
ch = chain stitch
st = stitch
SC = single crochet
HDC = Half Double Crochet
DC = double crochet
sl st = slip stitch


***Note: All ch sts in the beginning of rounds are meant to be ignored, and not counted as stitches, begin by crocheting in the same st as the ch 2 for every round.





-BASE HAT

Size 3-6 Months:
In Blue, Magic Ring, ch 2, 9 DC in magic ring, sl st in first DC, ch 2
Rnd 2: 2 DC in each around, join to first DC, ch 2 (18 DC)
Rnd 3: 2 DC in first st, DC in next st, repeat around, join, ch 2 (27 DC)
Rnd 4: 2 DC in first st, DC in next 2 sts, repeat around, join, ch 2 (36 DC)
Rnd 5: 2 DC in first st, DC in next 3 sts, repeat around, join, ch 2 (45 DC)
Rnd 6-12: DC around, (45 DC) Do not fasten off, work earflaps.

Size 6-12 months (15"-19"):
In Blue, Magic Ring, ch 2, 9 DC in magic ring, sl st in first DC, ch 2
Rnd 2: 2 DC in each around, join to first DC, ch 2 (18 DC)
Rnd 3: 2 DC in first st, DC in next st, repeat around, join, ch 2 (27 DC)

For 3-6 months leave 15 stitches along the front, for 6-12 months leave 18 stitches along the front, leave 20 stitches along the front for Toddler/Preschooler, fasten on next st

Row 4: HDC decrease, HDC in next 6 sts, HDC decrease, ch 2, turn (8 HDC)
Row 5: HDC decrease, HDC in next 4 sts, HDC decrease, ch 2, turn (6 HDC)
Row 6: HDC decrease, HDC in next 2 sts, HDC decrease, ch 2, turn (4 HDC)

-BRAIDS

I cut 9 Blue, 50 inch strings.  Fold in half, attach through the bottom of your earflap and braid.








-EYES (Make 2)

Size 3-6 months, 6-12 months, and Toddler/Preschooler:
Rnd 1: With Black, Magic ring, SC 6 times, sl st in 1st sc
Rnd 2: With Blue, attach, 2 SC in each st around (12 SC)
Rnd 3: With White, attach, 2 SC in 1st St, 1 SC in next st, repeat around, join, ch 1 (18 SC)
Rnd 4: 2 SC in first st, SC in next 2 sts, repeat around, Leave a long tail in white to sew onto hat (24 SC)

Size Child, Teen/Adult/Womens, and Large Adult/Mens:
Rnd 1: With Black, Magic ring, SC 6 times, sl st in 1st sc
Rnd 2: With Blue, attach, 2 SC in each st around (12 SC)
Rnd 3: With White, attach, 2 HDC in 1st St, 1 HDC in next st, repeat around, join, ch 2 (18 HDC)
Rnd 4: 2 DC in first st, DC in next 2 sts, repeat around, Leave a long tail in white to sew onto hat (24 DC)




-TAIL FIN

Size 3-6 months, 6-12 months, and Toddler/Preschooler:
In yellow, chain 11
Rnd 1: DC in 3rd ch from hook, DC in next 8 sts, DC in the 9 chs down the other side of the ch, join to first DC, ch 2 (18 DC)
Rnd 2: DC decrease in the same st as ch 2, DC in next 5 sts, DC decrease, repeat around, join, ch 2 (14 SC)
Rnd 3: DC decrease in the same st as ch 2, DC in next 3 sts, DC decrease, repeat around, join, ch 2 (10 DC)
Rnd 4: DC around, join, ch 2 (10 DC)
Rnd 5: DC around, join (10 DC)
Rnd 6: Sl st into first st, HDC in next st, DC in next st, HDC in next st, Sl St in next st, repeat around, fasten off(10 sts)
In Black, outline the outside edges in SC for a nice stripe, leave a long tail for sewing on to your hat

Size Child, Teen/Adult/Womens, and Large Adult/Mens:
In yellow, chain 11
Rnd 1: DC in 3rd ch from hook, DC in next 10 sts, DC in the 11 chs down the other side of the ch, join to first DC, ch 2 (22 DC)
Rnd 2: DC decrease in the same st as ch 2, DC in next 7 sts, DC decrease, repeat around, join, ch 2 (18 SC)
Rnd 3: DC decrease in the same st as ch 2, DC in next 5 sts, DC decrease, repeat around, join, ch 2 (14 DC)
Rnd 4: DC around, join, ch 2 (14 DC)
Rnd 5: DD decrease in the same st as ch 2, DC in next 3 sts, DC decrease, repeat around, join, ch 2 (10 DC)
Rnd 5: DC around, join, ch 2 (10 DC)
Rnd 6: Sl st into first st, HDC in next st, DC in next st, HDC in next st, Sl St in next st (10 sts)

-SIDE FINS (Make 2)

Size 3-6 months, 6-12 months, and Toddler/Preschooler:

Rnd 2: 2 DC in first st,(begin in same st as ch 2 and for every rnd), DC in next 2 sts, repeat around, join, ch 2 (8 DC)
Rnd 3: 2 DC in first st, SC in next 2 sts, 2 DC in next st, repeat around, join, switch to black (12 sts)
Rnd 4: In black, ch 1, SC around, join, switch to yellow (12 SC)
Rnd 5: In yellow, ch 2, 2 DC in first st, SC in next 4 sts, 2 DC in next st, repeat around, join (16 sts)
Row 6: Sl st the round together at the top, finish off (8 sts)


Size Child, Teen/Adult/Womens, and Large Adult/Mens:
Rnd 1: In Blue, Magic Ring, Ch 2, 8 DC in magic ring, sl st in first DC, ch 2 (leave a long tail out backwards through ring to attach to hat)
Rnd 2: 2 DC in first st,(begin in same st as ch 2 and for every rnd), DC in next 3 sts, repeat around, join, ch 2 (10 DC)
Rnd 3: 2 DC in first st, DC in next 4 sts, repeat around, join, ch 2 (12 DC)
Rnd 4: 2 DC in first st, SC in next 4 sts, 2 DC in next st, repeat around, join, switch to black (16 sts)
Rnd 5: In black, ch 1, SC around, join, switch to yellow (16 SC)
Rnd 6: In yellow, ch 2, 2 DC in first st, DC in next st, SC in next 4 sts, DC in next st, 2 DC in next sts, repeat around, join (20 sts)
Row 7: Sl st the round together at the top, finish off (10 sts)




-STRIPES

Size 3-6 months:
Leaving a long tail for sewing on hat, Ch 25, making sure no to twist your chain, join with sl st, ch 2
RND 1: HDC in same st as sl st, HDC in next 7 sts, 2 HDC in next st, HDC in next 2 sts, 2 HDC in next st, HDC in next 7 sts, SC in next 2 sts, 2 SC in next st, SC in next 2 sts, 2 sc in last st, join with sl st to the 1st HDC (29 sts)
ROW 2: Ch 11, HDC in 3rd ch from hook, HDC in next 17 sts, DC in next 4 sts, 2 DC in next 2 sts, HDC in next st, SC in next st, sl st in next st, turn (28 sts)
ROW 3: Skip 1 st, SC in next st, HDC in next st, 2 DC in next st, DC in next 2 sts, 2 DC in next st, HDC in next 22 sts, sl st in next st, fasten off, leave a long tail for sewing onto hat (30 sts)

Size 6-12 months:
Leaving a long tail for sewing on hat, Ch 26, making sure no to twist your chain, join with sl st, ch 2
RND 1: HDC in same st as sl st, HDC in next 8 sts, 2 HDC in next st, HDC in next 2 sts, 2 HDC in next st, HDC in next 7 sts, SC in next 2 sts, 2 SC in next st, SC in next 2 sts, 2 SC in last st, join with sl st to the 1st HDC (30 sts)
ROW 2: Ch 12, HDC in 3rd ch from hook, HDC in next 19 sts, DC in next 4 sts, 2 DC in next 2 sts, HDC in next st, SC in next st, sl st in next st, turn (30 sts)
ROW 3: Skip 1 st, SC in next st, HDC in next st, 2 DC in next st, DC in next 2 sts, 2 DC in next st, HDC in next 24 sts, sl st in next st, fasten off, leave a long tail for sewing onto hat (32 sts)

Size Toddler/Preschooler:
Leaving a long tail for sewing on hat, Ch 27, making sure no to twist your chain, join with sl st, ch 2
RND 1: HDC in same st as sl st, HDC in next 9 sts, 2 HDC in next st, HDC in next 2 sts, 2 HDC in next st, HDC in next 7 sts, SC in next 2 sts, 2 SC in next st, SC in next 2 sts, 2 SC in last st, join with sl st to the 1st HDC (31 sts)
ROW 2: Ch 13, HDC in 3rd ch from hook, HDC in next 21 sts, DC in next 4 sts, 2 DC in next 2 sts, HDC in next st, SC in next st, sl st in next st, turn (32 sts)
ROW 3: Skip 1 st, SC in next st, HDC in next st, 2 DC in next st, DC in next 2 sts, 2 DC in next st, HDC in next 26 sts, sl st in next st, fasten off, leave a long tail for sewing onto hat (34 sts)

Size Child:
Leaving a long tail for sewing on hat, Ch 28, making sure no to twist your chain, join with sl st, ch 2
RND 1: HDC in same st as sl st, HDC in next 10 sts, 2 HDC in next st, HDC in next 2 sts, 2 HDC in next st, HDC in next 7 sts, SC in next 2 sts, 2 SC in next st, SC in next 2 sts, 2 SC in last st, join with sl st to the 1st HDC (32 sts)
ROW 2: Ch 14, HDC in 3rd ch from hook, HDC in next 23 sts, DC in next 4 sts, 2 DC in next 2 sts, HDC in next st, SC in next st, sl st in next st, turn (34 sts)
ROW 3: Skip 1 st, SC in next st, HDC in next st, 2 DC in next st, DC in next 2 sts, 2 DC in next st, HDC in next 28 sts, sl st in next st, fasten off, leave a long tail for sewing onto hat (36 sts)

Size Teen/Adult/Womens:
Leaving a long tail for sewing on hat, Ch 29, making sure no to twist your chain, join with sl st, ch 2
RND 1: HDC in same st as sl st, HDC in next 11 sts, 2 HDC in next st, HDC in next 2 sts, 2 HDC in next st, HDC in next 7 sts, SC in next 2 sts, 2 SC in next st, SC in next 2 sts, 2 SC in last st, join with sl st to the 1st HDC (33 sts)
ROW 2: Ch 15, HDC in 3rd ch from hook, HDC in next 25 sts, DC in next 4 sts, 2 DC in next 2 sts, HDC in next st, SC in next st, sl st in next st, turn (36 sts)
ROW 3: Skip 1 st, SC in next st, HDC in next st, 2 DC in next st, DC in next 2 sts, 2 DC in next st, HDC in next 30 sts, sl st in next st, fasten off, leave a long tail for sewing onto hat (38 sts)

Size Large Adult/Mens:
Leaving a long tail for sewing on hat, Ch 30, making sure no to twist your chain, join with sl st, ch 2
RND 1: HDC in same st as sl st, HDC in next 12 sts, 2 HDC in next st, HDC in next 2 sts, 2 HDC in next st, HDC in next 7 sts, SC in next 2 sts, 2 SC in next st, SC in next 2 sts, 2 SC in last st, join with sl st to the 1st HDC (34 sts)
ROW 2: Ch 16, HDC in 3rd ch from hook, HDC in next 27 sts, DC in next 4 sts, 2 DC in next 2 sts, HDC in next st, SC in next st, sl st in next st, turn (38 sts)
ROW 3: Skip 1 st, SC in next st, HDC in next st, 2 DC in next st, DC in next 2 sts, 2 DC in next st, HDC in next 32 sts, sl st in next st, fasten off, leave a long tail for sewing onto hat (40 sts)




-DORSEL FIN

These are only approx sizes, basically just do a row of SC in blue, and a row in black to the size you like to create the fin!

Size 3-6 months:
Row 1: In blue, with hat folded in half, fasten on approx. 4 rows up from base of hat, SC 24 times working up your hat, to approx. 4th row after center, fasten off.
Row 2: In black, Fasten on, SC in the 24 SCs from before.

Size 6-12 months: 
Row 1: In blue, with hat folded in half, fasten on approx. 4 rows up from base of hat, SC 26 times working up your hat, to approx. 4th row after center, fasten off.
Row 2: In black, Fasten on, SC in the 26 SCs from before.

Size Toddler/Preschooler:
Row 1: In blue, with hat folded in half, fasten on approx. 4 rows up from base of hat, SC 28 times working up your hat, to approx. 4th row after center, fasten off.
Row 2: In black, Fasten on, SC in the 28 SCs from before.

Size Child:
Row 1: In blue, with hat folded in half, fasten on approx. 4 rows up from base of hat, SC 30 times working up your hat, to approx. 4th row after center, fasten off.
Row 2: In black, Fasten on, SC in the 30 SCs from before.

Size Teen/Adult/Womens:
Row 1: In blue, with hat folded in half, fasten on approx. 4 rows up from base of hat, SC 32 times working up your hat, to approx. 4th row after center, fasten off.
Row 2: In black, Fasten on, SC in the 32 SCs from before.

Size Adult/Mens:
Row 1: In blue, with hat folded in half, fasten on approx. 4 rows up from base of hat, SC 34 times working up your hat, to approx. 4th row after center, fasten off.
Row 2: In black, Fasten on, SC in the 34 SCs from before.
